Hypothermia is something that can affect every water sport enthusiast.
To deal with it you have to understand it. Tom Burroughs did an incredible job of explaining the character and symptoms of hypothermia on the banks of the Tuckaseegee river. During my time at the ACA Swiftwater Rescue Clinic in Dilsboro North Carolina I was able to learn from an incredible instructor Tom Burroughs on understanding hypothermia. Tom was incredibly knowledgeable right off the bat and his speaking style was informative, succinct and clear. I’m not sure of his experience years or path through the whitewater world but I do know he is the state director of the ACA for Arkansas.
The information that was presented really broke down the technical problems that lead up to hypothermia and gave you the heads up on what to look for to understand you were even dealing with this deadly foe. Recognizing this debilitating factor can make all the difference for you and the people on your trip. It was great to learn from Tom and I highly recommend anyone reading this to take a class from him to open up your mind as he did mine.
This was some video that I captured during my renewal classes for my Level 4 Swiftwater Rescue Certification.
